List of Conjunctions

A conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect two words, clauses, or phrases in a sentence.

Types of Conjunction

There are three types of conjunctions,

1. Coordinating Conjunction
2. Correlative Conjunction
3. Subordinating Conjunction

#1. Coordinating Conjunctions:

Coordinating Conjunction is a type of conjunction that combines two words, clauses, and phrases whose formation is similar.

There are only seven coordinating conjunctions which we can easily remember in our mind by remembering the word “F A N B O Y S”

• For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.

Examples:

1. I chose that car as a birthday gift for my son.
2. Rambo and Charlie are good soldiers.
3. He neither drinks nor smokes.
4. Angela is good at singing but poor at dancing.
5. Will you come to my home or meet outside somewhere?
6. The theme of tonight’s party is yet to decide.
7. The wheel of our van was punctured on the way, so we have to wait in that lodge.

#2. Correlative Conjunctions:

Correlative conjunction is a conjunction of a couple of words that are used to connect two phrases or clauses in a sentence.

examples

1. The more…, the more:
   • The more you go high, the more things look small.
2. No sooner… than:
   • No sooner had Mahendra Singh Dhoni entered the stadium than the whole audience started shouting.
3. Whether… or:
   • You have to complete every task, whether it is easy or hard.
4. both… and:
   • She can be both a teacher and a student together.
5. Neither… nor:
   • Neither the shopkeeper nor my friend has this game set.
6. So… as:
   • I have known my friend for so long when he works as a librarian.
7. Either… or:
   • You can either eat your favorite dish or order something else.
8. Not only… but also:
   • My friend does know not only the English language but also 14 different languages.
9. Scarcely had… when:

#3. Subordinating Conjunction:

Subordinating conjunction joins two unlike clauses, phrases, or a sentence structure from which one is a dependent clause, and the other is an independent clause.

• Because, before, by the time.
• Even, even if, even though.
• How.
• If, in as much as, in order that, in case, if only, if then, if when.
• Just as.
• Lest.
• Now that, now since, now when.
• Once, only if.
• Provided, provided that.
• Rather than.
• Since, so that, supposing.
• Than, that, though, till.
• Unless, until.
• When, whenever, where, wherever, where if, while, whether, whereas, whatever, which, whichever, who, whoever, whom, whomever, whose.

Examples:

1. After:
   • I will meet him after the lecture in college.
2. Although:

4. As if:

5. As much as:
